Stonewall Jackson, byname of Thomas Jonathan Jackson, (born January 21, 1824, Clarksburg, Virginia, U.S.-died May 10, 1863, Guinea Station, Virginia), Confederate general in the American Civil War, one of its most skillful tacticians, who gained his sobriquet “Stonewall” by his stand at the First Battle of Bull Run (called First Manassas by the South) in 1861.
